CLIENTELE
Juneau, Alaska is the main hub for travelers exploring southeast Alaska. Our clientele are diverse in ethnicity, language, physical ability, and culture. While our clients must meet basic physical requirements to join us in the field, our Team is dedicated to facilitating exceptional outdoor adventures for all clients with kindness, consistency and sincerity.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must be 21 years of age or older and a United States Citizen (or be eligible to work in the US). Applicants must also possess a valid driver’s license, a driving record free of moving violations in the past 5 years, and the medical certification pertinent to their desired position. Above and Beyond Alaska does not currently sponsor any type of work visa.
AVAILABILITY
Most positions at ABAK require applicants to be available for the full season – Late April through the end of September 2024.
Qualified applicants with time limitations may be considered for a handful of short-season positions. There are a limited number of positions that start in May and run through August. See individual job descriptions below for more information.
2024 Seasonal Positions
Field Positions
Boat Captain: Will operate a 25’ aluminum Weldcraft or 26’ aluminum Hewescraft water taxis, each with two 200 HP outboards, transporting kayak guides, guests, and equipment from Auke Bay Harbor to various launch points around the Channel Islands/Stephen’s Passage. Our Boat Captains facilitate intimate marine wildlife viewing opportunities throughout our 6 hour Paddle with Whales kayak tour, and collaborate with the guides to determine tour routes on a daily basis. Norris Glacier Guide: Our Norris glacier tours access the magnificent Norris Glacier by plane, packraft, and foot. Guides with be based out at Norris base camp for weekly rotations. Guides will be trained in specific tours and technical skills that correspond with their ability level and motivation to grow. Guides will possess or develop a formidable knowledge of the unique rainforest, glacial ecosystems, and geographical features. Click for additional Job Details and to apply.
Canoe and Hiking Guide: Our glacier tours access the magnificent Mendenhall Glacier by foot or large canoe. Guides will be trained in specific tours and technical skills that correspond with their ability level and motivation to grow. Sea Kayak Guide: Guides facilitate paddling and wildlife viewing adventures in the Channel Islands State Marine Park, Pack Creek Bear Sanctuary on Admiralty Island, and Auke Bay. Our operating areas are remote and often require floatplane or water taxi transportation to access. Sea Kayak Guides demonstrating solid technical skills, judgement, and group management ability will be trained to guide all ABAK kayak tours. Click for additional Job Details and to apply.
Our guides embody Above and Beyond Alaska’s dedication to safety, customer service, and environmental conservation. ABAK Guides must be able to participate in an intensive pre-season training program at the end of April to learn or develop technical skills, natural history knowledge, and superior customer service strategies.
Office and Logistics
Daily Coordinator: Works directly with the Operations Team to oversee day to day logistics and office sales duties. This seasonal position will primarily focus on customer relations, customer reservations using our booking system and engage in customer phone/email/chat correspondence, daily trip/van scheduling and auditing, guide communication, administration duties, and warehouse support. Support Specialist: Works directly with the Operations Team to maintain ABAK facilities, gear, and vehicles for all our daily operations. The Support Specialist works with guide team to prep equipment/gear and food for trips, engage guests, help maintain operational zones, assist operations team with daily logistics, transport guests, fuel and clean vans, fix and clean canoes, kayaks, and equipment at the kayak rental shop. Specialists will assist Kayak Rental Specialists with set up of kayaks at the shop, assisting with outfitting of kayak rentals, transportation, set up, cleaning of rental gear. Tour Representative: Works directly with the Operations Team to oversee dock duties and assist with sales. As the first point of contact for ABAK clients meeting downtown, the Tour Rep must be able to enthusiastically engage with clients, organize groups based on trip roster, and collaborate with cruise ship representatives and dock vendors. Tour Reps will help support the warehouse by prepping gear and delicious snacks for glacier and kayak day trips, fix equipment, maintain a clean and organized warehouse, and transport guests to various locations around Juneau. Kayak/SUP Rental Shop
Rental Shop Specialist: Responsible for facilitating kayak rentals, safety presentations, kayak transports, kayak repairs, assists with outfitting guided kayak tours, and guiding half-day kayak tours 1-2 times per week during peak season in the Auke Bay area. Specialists will also make customer reservations using our booking system and engage in customer phone/email/chat correspondence.
