Above & Beyond Alaska, LLC (ABAK), is a local guiding company based in Juneau, the capital city, that is nestled below the Coast Mountains and beside the ocean in the heart of Southeast Alaska’s temperate rainforest . We have been exploring the Tongass National Forest, glaciers of the Juneau Icefield, and waters of Alaska’s inside passage for over 25 years and guiding others since 2002. ABAK offers an opportunity to explore any of the environments found around Juneau by kayak, foot, boat, or plane. Our goal is to provide a complete Alaskan wilderness experience by sharing with our clients our passion, technical know-how, and natural history knowledge.

fter spending a decade working for other guiding companies in the area, company founders Becky and Sean Janes followed their dream of starting their own guiding service with friends. They set out to take a different approach than other guiding outfits in town by offering smaller, highly customizable trips. Established in 2002, Above and Beyond Alaska (ABAK) has grown into a premier guiding company in the Juneau area, specializing in wilderness experiences featuring glaciers, bears, and whales. From the beginning, ABAK’s goal has been to provide high-quality experiences in Southeast Alaska that connect guests to the region’s wild beauty in meaningful and memorable ways.
In 2022, Alaska Seaplanes welcomed Above and Beyond Alaska into its company family. Today, ABAK is led by Liz Barlow and her team, who continues to build on the company’s strong foundation while guiding its next chapter of growth. As part of Alaska Seaplanes, ABAK is expanding its exceptional tour offerings and creating even more opportunities for exploration and adventure for its valued guests.
Our guides receive in-depth training that complements their personal experience in both ocean and mountain environments. They are certified in CPR and advanced first aid, ensuring safety remains a top priority. Most importantly, their passion for the outdoors—combined with expert instruction and rich interpretive knowledge—creates unique and memorable experiences for individuals, couples, families, and small groups of all ability levels.
