Experience The Trip

Pull on the waterproof boots we provide, and step into the cool waters of Mendenhall Lake. On this private tour, you will be guided on tandem kayaks across a lake formed by the glacier. This tour will be tailored to your group’s needs and goals, whether its extra time at a feature, a faster or slower pace, focusing on photography, or anything else.

The lake is quiet in the mornings. Your paddle dips into the water as you make your way past ice bergs, freshly calved off the glacier. The only other sound is the roar of nugget falls in the distance as it plummets off the mountain side, and of course right ahead of you the massive awe-inspiring glacier.

Once you round the rock peninsula, the face of the glacier confronts you like a giant. Blocks of ice stand tall, waiting for the right moment to calve into the waters. Arctic terns circle overhead, fighting off intruding Bald Eagles. Mountain goats follow the retreating snow line, slowly making their way up looking for fresh greens.

When you make landfall you will hike a short distance across rocky terrain, and onto the glacier which is in constant change with features that disappear and reappear over the course of the season. After strapping on your micro-spikes, your guide will take you on a tour of the glacier’s accessible features which may include exploring the other-worldliness of an ice cave, descending into crevasses carved by melt water, or peering into the deep blue well of a moulin.

Privately guided kayak tours are limited to 6 people. If you would like to book a larger group, your group will be switched to a Private Canoe Paddle and Trek, or please consider our Privately Guided Mendenhall Glacier Trek. Feel free to reach out to the office with any questions about the best option for your group.
