Areas you can cross off your bucket list are:
Watching Humpback Whales, sea kayaking in Alaska

Watch whales & other wildlife up close with your own boat, licensed captain, and professional kayak guide!

With your private boat and kayak guide you will have the luxury of choosing to spend your time as you please and travel at your own pace while enjoying the best that Southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage has to offer.

Booking our Private Channel Islands Marine Park Paddle allows us to cater to you and you only. A Private Trip is recommended for:

  • Those wishing to book an additional 1.5 hours of whale watching
  • Groups with between 7 and 12 people (Note that two boats that accommodate six passengers would be required.  The boats would stay together, but the group would be split.)
  • Those wanting to explore a specific location
  • Groups with children under 8
  • Those wanting to spend more time on the water – make the trip into a full day adventure
  • Groups looking for a personal adventure catered to them

This trip combines a boat transport to an uninhabited island, sea kayaking, and wildlife viewing for the ultimate eco-adventure!  You will be picked up near your cruise ship or local accommodations and taken to our six passenger vessel.  From there we will head out of the harbor into the waters of the Inside Passage to one of the Channel Islands where we will disembark from the boat and get into our kayaks.  Typically, the next two hours will be spent paddling along the forested shore-line searching for whales and other wildlife, and enjoying the scenery.  While on the water you may see humpback whales, harbor seals, steller sea lions, dall’s porpoise, harbor porpoise, orca, numerous bird species including bald eagles, and deer or river otters along the shore.  However, on a private trip you have the ability to choose how your time in the Marine Park is spent.  More time can be spent exploring the temperate rain forest environment of the islands, beach combing, or searching for a variety of animals in the intertidal zone. Regardless of how you choose to spend you time, throughout this trip our expert guides and boat captain will share their local knowledge of the area, its natural history, and interesting information about the wildlife and their behavior.

Bring your camera and appetite for adventure.  This trip will create memories to last a lifetime!

The Juneau area has close to 100 different humpback whales that spend their summers feeding in the nutrient-rich waters of Stephens Passage, Lynn Canal, and Favorite Channel.  These whales spend most of their time feeding, but are often seen demonstrating a variety of different behaviors: fin slapping, tail lobbing, spy hopping, logging, peduncle throwing, and breaching.  During the months of July and August it is also possible to observe the unique group feeding behavior known as bubble-net feeding.

On a private trip with Above and Beyond Alaska we can provide the opportunity to get up close and personal with these majestic and awe-inspiring mammals.  There are a lot of companies in Juneau that offer whale-watching, but ABAK is the only one that can combine it with sea kayaking for a one of a kind adventure.  Additionally, our 6 passenger boat(s) allow us to maneuver safely around the wildlife to provide the best views and photographic opportunities.  Simply contact our office and request to add on 1.5 hours of whale watching to the Private Channel Islands Marine Park Paddle.
